Our New President
Bob Jones has been a professional archaeologist for 50 years specialising in urban archaeology, especially of the medieval and post-medieval periods, although in his career, he has investigated sites from the Roman period onwards. He started his career in Lincoln where he spent 9 happy years excavating many sites, of all periods. He moved to Bristol in 1981 and almost immediately undertook an excavation in Redcliffe, followed soon afterwards by t...
President's Meeting Postponed
We are sorry to have to announce that the 2022 President’s meeting, which had been due to take place on Saturday 18 June, has had to be postponed until later this year. While this news will clearly come as a disappointment to members who has been looking forward to this event, unexpected logistical problems have been encountered during the preparation of this year’s Presidential visit which meant the Society could not be confident of delivering t...
Report of the BGAS Annual General Meeting for 2022
The 145th Annual General Meeting was held online on Saturday 23 April 2022. Fifty-six members were present. The meeting was opened by the General Secretary, who welcomed members to the AGM. Before the start of the formal business Dr Barton reported the results of a consultative ballot all members had been invited to participate in prior to the meeting. President for 2021-22, Mr Michael Hare, then took the chair and invited the Honorary General Se...
In memory of Dr James Hodsdon
It is with deep regret that we announce the death of the Society’s website manager, Dr James Hodsdon, who passed away suddenly on 20 January 2022. James had been a BGAS member for over 25 years and contributed to the Society in so many ways. He was elected as a trustee in 2009, served as Chair of Council from 2018 to 2021 and was General Editor of the Gloucestershire Record Series between 2010 and 2020. As one of the key players involved in our a...

Gloucester Cathedral Archaeological Reports
Gloucester Cathedral has had an archaeological consultant since 1983. The reports which result from archaeological interventions, including observation of masonry repairs, have seldom been formally published but are retained in the archaeological archive at the cathedral. Copies are in the Cathedral library and have also been deposited in Gloucestershire Archives and with the Heritage Environment Record at Gloucester Museum. The reports are prefi...
Abel Wantner's History
“MARSHFIELD is a noted town for good cakes.” … or so we learn from Abel Wantner, whose previously unpublished late-1600s History of Gloucestershire is now available on this site. Wantner’s somewhat quirky compilation – preserved as a manuscript at the Bodleian – has long been on the source check-list for serious researchers. The full text (pdf), transcribed by the late John Fendley, can now be consulted with ease. As well as occasional flashes of...

Welcome
The founders of BGAS back in 1876 wanted to create a learned society where interested individuals from any walk of life could share knowledge and discoveries about all aspects of the past, in Bristol and Gloucestershire. Today, while we tend to divide ‘the past’ into either history or archaeology, the two disciplines have always overlapped and we still aim to welcome anyone with a deep interest in either field. Times change, and BGAS is changing ...

Sample page 8: Text styles
Sir Harry Preston was a Brighton businessman and sportsman. In the 1920s and 30s, he made the Royal Albion Hotel into the town’s most fashionable place to stay and sponsored the first ‘Motor Race Week’ on the sea-front. Born in 1860 of “poor but honest parents in London” (he was actually born in Cheltenham) Sir Harry Preston reportedly said he entered the hotel trade in Ramsgate and by 1900 was running The Royal Hotel in Bournemouth. In the early...
